Midsummer Nature Day

Celebrate midsummer with a full day of nature, learning and inspiration at Brigit’s Garden, Co. Galway on Sunday 22nd June 2025. This free programme of expert-led biodiversity walks offers visitors a chance to reconnect with the land, learn from specialists and gather practical ideas for supporting wildlife at home.
Running across the day with morning, afternoon and evening sessions, this special event explores everything from wildflowers and native trees to butterflies, herbs and bats. Whether you drop in for a single walk or stay for the whole day, you’ll enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the Celtic Gardens while picking up valuable insights on creating and protecting natural habitats.
Morning Walks | 11am – 12.30pm
Start your day immersed in the beauty and knowledge of Ireland’s native flora and fauna.

How to Grow Wildflowers: Learn how to create and manage wildflower meadows that support pollinators and biodiversity. Led by Jenny Beale.

Our Native Trees: Discover the folklore and meaning behind Ireland’s trees and the ancient Ogham alphabet. Led by Carol Barrett.

All About Ponds: Explore the wildlife in and around Brigit’s Garden’s ponds and learn how to make your own. Led by Dr Martin Gammell.
Afternoon Walks | 2pm – 3.30pm
Continue your nature journey with more themed sessions and hands-on activities.

Citizen Science Butterfly Survey: Find out how to spot and identify Irish butterflies and how to take part in biodiversity recording. Led by Dr Caitriona Carlin and Dr Martin Gammell.

Wild Herb Walk: Engage your senses with a walk through local plants and learn to make a natural skin cream using herbs. Led by Maria Buitenhuis.

Attracting Wildlife: Pick up simple tips on how to make your garden or community space more wildlife-friendly. Led by Kay Synott.

Family Woodland Session: Designed for children aged 4+ and their parents, this nature-based session includes games, crafts and outdoor fun with plenty of ideas to take home. Led by Forest School leader Carol Barrett.
Evening Walk | 10pm – 11.15pm
Close the day with an enchanting bat walk beneath the midsummer sky.

Evening Bat Walk: Use bat detectors to hear and identify bats as they come to life at dusk. Suitable for adults and children aged 6+, led by Dr Caitriona Carlin.
Booking Details
All walks are free but places are limited and must be booked in advance. While the daytime walks are for adults, the family session and bat walk are open to children within the specified age groups.
Participants can also pre-book a wholesome lunch of soup, brown bread, summer salads, tea, coffee and biscuits for €15.
