Only a small number of very lucky people have ever seen the inside of Newgrange on December 21st but now we can all see how beautiful it must be.
At sunrise on December 21st, the shortest day of the year, sunlight shines through the light box at the entrance to the passage tomb at Newgrange. As the shaft of light moves down along the passage it highlights the rock art carved on the massive stones along its length.
Access to the chamber is by lottery only. There were 32,682 entries for just 120 places in Solstice 2016 but unfortunately the weather may not be favourable this year.
Fortunately, an artist has animated a model that it is not dependent on the weather.
