The attempted abduction of a newborn child from a hospital in Hamburg was prevented by his 9-year-old brother.

Die Welt reports the police saying that they arrested a 34-year-old woman who attempted the take a newborn from a hospital in the Hamburg district of Heimfeld.

The suspect was accused of trying to abduct the day-old baby while his mother slept last Friday afternoon.

“The suspect entered the room of the mother, who was asleep, at the time of the crime, and took the newborn from the bed next to her”, said police spokesperson Ulf Wundrack.

As the woman took the baby through the hospital corridors she was being followed by the baby's older brother.

When he approached the woman she handed the baby over immediately.

"The 34-year-old was stopped and arrested while she was inside the hospital. She seemed mentally unstable and was handed over to the psychiatric emergency unit," added Wundrack
