An eight year old girl died in a farming accident in Mayo yesterday evening.

The young girl was fatally injured on her family farm near Castlebar at around 5pm.

The child was rushed to Mayo University Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Mayo County Council Cathaoirleach Michael Holmes told the Mirror: “It is the most terrible thing and the worst thing that could happen to any family and my heart goes out to them. It’s the worst type of tragedy that can happen.”

Gardaí in Westport and the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) have launched separate investigations into the tragic death and a post mortem will be carried out today.
