Heavy snow expected as Status Orange weather warning issued nationwide

Overnight temperature could fall as low as minus 8 degrees this weekend as heavy snow set to fall over most of the country.

A Status Orange warning is in place for Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Dublin, Kildare, Laois, Longford, Louth, Wicklow, Offaly, Westmeath and Meath.

The warning is in place from 23:00 on Saturday until 23:00 Sunday, with snow expected between 4 to 8cm. These may be greater on high ground.

The warning also advised about drifting snow locally at times too with brisk winds, slippery paths and treacherous roads.

Rain on Saturday will spread from the southwest. turning to snow as it moves north overnight, bringing large accumulations to Connacht, the Midlands and much of Leinster.

There will be more heavy rain and snow falls on Sunday. There may be more snow in Munster on Sunday evening.

It will be very cold over the next few days with high daily temperatures barely above freezing. On Sunday night, it could fall to as low as minus 8 degrees in place.

The early forecast for next week is for the current cold spell to continue with further wintry showers. Overnight temperatures to continue to fall below freezing.
