Connemara Green Festival

This is the 5th year of the Connemara Green Festival and each year it continues to grow and expand. The main aim of the festival is to raise awareness of the unique ecology of Connemara and raise funds for biodiversity projects and conservation of our local environment. This year’s theme is ‘‘Craft, culture and wilderness’. This year our biodiversity project is to raise funds for awareness and conservation of the Freshwater Pearl Mussel, which is the rarest invertebrate in Europe with sustainable populations only existing now in Ireland and Scotland. This mussel is found in the local Dawros river and is under huge threat. The river was a pristine angling river for trout and salmon but has declined in recent years. It is home to Wild Atlantic salmon and is a critical part of the fragile eco system of the river.
